This 10 day safari in Tanzania designed especially for photographers, staying seven nights in Tanzania’s finest wildlife area, the Serengeti National Park, and escorted by well-known wildlife photographer.

- Day 2Arusha-Tarangire National ParkA two-three hour drive takes us to Tarangire National Park. The park is famous for its elephant herds (some of the largest in Africa), a plethora of baobab trees and two distinctive species of antelope: the fringed-eared oryx and the gerenuk. - Day 3Full day in Tarangire National ParkEmbark on a full day game drive in Tarangire National Park. The Park is the wilderness experience in its own right! Tarangire is much more wooded than Serengeti with Acacia Trees and mixed woodland dotting the African Savannah of the Park. Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, while the migratory Wildebeests, Zebras, Buffalos, Impalas, Gazelles, Hartebeests and Elands crowds the shrinking lagoons. It is also the one place in Tanzania where dry – country antelopes such as the stately Fringe – eared Oryx and peculiar spiral – horned Lesser Kudus can readily be observed. - Day 4Tarangire-Lake Manyara National PakAfter breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park for game drives . Lake Manyara NP is a lovely scenic park that offers another unique experience of a Tanzania Safari! The park is also famous for its elephants; huge number of baboons and due to its varied landscape, the park has an impressive range of other game animals including wildebeest, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, zebra, warthog, waterbuck, dik-dik and impala. Bird – Watching here is very good, especially raptors.Along the way you will stop and discover the local village of Mto waMbu to experience the real African life, the local market and enjoy the exceptional hospitality of the local people. - Day 5Ngorongoro Rim WalkAfter breakfast drive to Ngorongoro conservation Area for morning or Afternoon crater rim walk. Ngorongoro Crater Rim walk is a very good way to get out of the car without committing to a serious walking or trekking after several days of wildlife viewing. It allows you to see tracks and signs and have the feeling of isolation that comes from trekking in the African Bush. An expert guide and armed ranger will accompany you during the walk to protect you from dangerous wildlife. To start your Ngorongoro Crater Rim hike you will drive to the starting point. The walk follows the Western rim of the Crater past the spectacular Oloirobi viewpoint. There are patches of forest, to begin with, and later it opens up into grassland. There are spectacular views down into the Crater on your right as you walk and then some more great views emerge to your left towards Olduvai Gorge, the Serengeti, and the Gol mountains. This is an easy walk with no steep climbs, just a few gentle slopes. It lasts about 1 – 2.5 hours and can be enjoyed at any time of day though we suggest you avoid the midday heat. - Day 6Ngorongoro crater-Serengeti National ParkAfter breakfast, have a morning game drive to Ngorongoro for a day crater tour. The jewel in Ngorongoro's crown is a deep, volcanic crater, the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world. About 20kms across, 600 meters deep and 300 sq km in area, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder. We will visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, which is one of the main features of the crater. - Day 7-9Full days in Serengeti National ParkHave breakfast at the lodge then hop on a full day game drive in the Serengeti National park. Try to follow and view the great migration from every corner of Serengeti, and late afternoon drive back to the lodge/tented camp. Serengeti National Park: The park is well known for its healthy stock of other resident wildlife, particularly the "big five", named for the five most prized trophies taken by hunters: Lion: the Serengeti is believed to hold the largest population of lions in Africa due in part to the abundance of prey species. More than 3,000 lions live in this ecosystem. African Leopard: these reclusive predators are commonly seen in the Seronera region but are present throughout the national park with the population at around 1,000. - Day 10DepartureFollowing breakfast your final game drive in Serengeti, you will be taken to the Seronera Airstrip for your scheduled Regional Air flight to Arusha,lunch and a day room at the booked lodge awaits. HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SAFARI
Preparing for East Africa safari can be a daunting prospect at first glance.
Figuring out when to visit, which parks to include, where to stay, and how long to spend in each location can be a stressful task, but we’re here to help!
PASSPORTS AND VISAS
It is first aspects for Preparation of safaris. All travelers will need a current passport with an expiration date of at least six months from the time of entry into Tanzania. Tanzania tourist visas can be purchased in advance through the nearest Tanzanian embassy, or upon arrival at the airport or border crossing.
VACCINATIONS
Proper health preparations for the trip are your responsibility. You may be able to get your vaccinations from your own physician, but a travels clinic will be more familiar with the necessary vaccines and can also provide other helpful information. Be sure to also discuss malaria prevention with the travel clinic.
TRAVEL AND MEDICAL INSURANCE
East Africa Choice Safaris does not provide insurance for travelers. Speak with your travel agent or airline about options for travel insurance to cover personal accident, medical expenses and medical evacuation, repatriation, trip cancellation and loss of personal effects.
CLOTHING
The weather may vary considerably throughout your trip, or even throughout the day, so plan on clothing that can be layered if it’s cool, or removed if it’s warm. Choose separates that can be mixed and matched, and avoid fabrics that require special care. Neutral colors are good for safari; avoid black and blue clothing as tsetse flies are attracted to those colors. Accessorize with modest jewelry. To respect cultural norms, avoid sleeveless blouses and short shorts or skirts.
Depending on your itinerary, consider a pair of sturdy closed-toe shoes in case of mud or rough terrain. Sandals will be appropriate for safari. Most days will be sunny, so bring appropriate sun protection: hat (wide-brim is best to protect the neck and ears), sunscreen, sunglasses.
MONEY ON SAFARI IN EAST AFRICA.
While all of our Friends of Africa Family Safaris itineraries cover the important things such as accommodation, meals, park entry fees, and game drives – there are always additional costs that might pop up.
Things such as alcoholic beverages, souvenirs, snacks, laundry, and tips for your driver are examples of a few additional costs that might arise during your safari.
Tanzania uses the US Dollar for tourism. We recommend budgeting around $30 – $50 USD per day for incidental expenses and tips.
TIPPING IN EAST AFRICA
Tipping is customary.
We recommend tipping $20 USD per day to your safari driver (per group, not per person), $10 – $15 USD per day to your safari cook (when camping), $20 USD per day to your Kilimanjaro climbing guide, and $10 – $15 USD per day to your Kilimanjaro climbing porters.
You can pay this all at once at the conclusion of your safari or Kilimanjaro climb.
WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR SAFARI:
Packing for your first safari can be a bit daunting. What do you bring? What don’t you need? Below you’ll find our recommended list of things to bring along with you when you’re on safari.
- A backpack;
- Comfortable clothing for daily wear;
- A warm sweater or light fleece;
- A windbreaker or waterproof jacket;
- Walking shoes or boots;
- A dress shirt and trousers or dress for wearing to dinner;
- Sunglasses;
- Hat;
- Sunscreen and lip balm;
- Insect repellent;
- Camera and charger;
- Binoculars;
- A flashlight or headlamp;
- Guide books;
- Phone and charger.
You may also wish to bring your own first aid kit. While all of our Friends of Africa Family Safaris vehicles have their own on board first aid kit, it never hurts to be prepared.
- Anti-malarial medication;
- Painkillers;
- Antihistamines for allergies and insect bites;
- Cold and flu medication;
- Anti-Diarrheal medication;
- Medicines for rehydration after diarrhea or sunstroke;
- Sunscreen and lip balm;
- Eye drops;
- Moisturiser for treating sunburn;
- Antiseptic lotion;
- Rubbing alcohol;
- Bandages and plasters;
- Scissors.
You may also wish to bring along water purification tablets and any medications you take for any existing medical conditions.
Don’t let the above list daunt you. Many of these items are only necessary in extreme cases, but it’s better to have something and not need it than it is to need something and not have it!
