Tanzania Cultural tour: A trip to Tanzania is about more than just wildlife or scenery – the real face of Tanzania is found among the combined faces of many cultures. It is the people who bring the destination to life-each landscape has a different cultural significance to a different community, and the wildlife has long been an essential part of traditional culture.

Tanzania Cultural tours let you plunge into a country and keep going until you’re out of your depth with an eclectic blend of experiences to keep for a lifetime. Normally visitors come to Tanzania for authentic wildlife and tranquil beach experience. Apart from these, cultural tours are a popular product in Tanzania that is mostly as an add-on to enrich main safari tour programs. These tours comprise visiting the villages which are accessible to visitors who may have a glimpse of the authentic lifestyle of more than 120 tribes in rural Tanzania.
Besides giving a cultural flavor to the itineraries and adding quality to the tours offered in Tanzania, we developed cultural tours to generate direct income to the local communities that are being visited, contributing to their development. Thus by visiting the cultural sites indirectly you would be giving support to community health, primary education, water supply, and many other social and economic projects carried out at village level as well as reforestation and protection of the environment. Through this, you can also learn their food, language, and dress-up and how they are able to cope up staying together with the wild without hurting each other.
Itinerary at a Glance
- Day 1ARRIVAL DAY , WELCOME ,TANZANIAUpon arrival at Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our driver will transfer you to your hotel in Arusha. Depending on the time of arrival you will also have time to explore the city and the vibrant Maasai market where you will shop for souvenirs. If you arrive late, do not worry, you will still have time to go shopping on the last day of Safari.Meals: BB
- Day 2CULTURAL TOUR-ENGIKARET MAASAI VILLAGEAfter breakfast and briefing, you will head out to Engikaret Maasai Village where you will experience traditional Maasai culture in an authentic setting; you will experience the Maasai way of life just the way they live it every day. You will also participate in the Maasai traditional dancing, witness the Maasai people slaughtering a got and drinking a raw fresh blood from it. Later in the afternoon, you will drive back to Arusha.Meals: B.L.D
- Day 3CHEMKA HOT SPRING WATERPick up from your hotel right after breakfast then all the way to dry land and full of acacia and baobab trees towards Rundugai village. Soon you will arrive at nice and natural pool with clean and warm water which will make you feel like paradise in mild of dry land. Walking around Kikeletwa village then back to the pool where you will have the time to take lunch and rest while swimming and at evening we return back to Outpost Lodge for dinner and overnight.Meals: B,L,D
- Day 4NKOARANGA VILLAGE COFFEE TOURAfter breakfast depart to Nkoaranga village for cultural tour activities. Once we get there we will visit the coffee plantations of the small village of Nkoaranga on Mount Meru with a local guide, and learn about picking up the coffee from the coffee tree, drying process and the whole process of roasting the coffee. We also will visit the orphanage center, hospital and village school. You will also be spoiled with a delicious local food as well as a freshly roasted coffee. Later in the evening you will be transferred to Arusha. Dinner and overnight at Outpost Lodge.Meals: B,L,D
- Day 5MONDULI JUUWe'll pick you up at your hotel in Arusha at 8:00 in the morning and depart for Monduli Mountains, northwest of Arusha. It won't take us long to get there and soon we'll start walking, following gentle gullies from the highland down to the plains. We arrive at our campsite near Springs escarpment at dinnertime. We will enjoy barbecues with the Maasai sharing our life stories around an open-fireMeals: B,L,D
- Day 6MONDULI JUU - LAKE EYASIHike, guided tour, traditional medicinal plants Visit a Boma After breakfast you go on a botanical hike, on which you smell and feel the various medicinal plants of the Masai, learn about their processing and application and meet many Masai on the way, either with their herds of cows and goats or with their herds Donkeys to the waterhole. Warm welcome in Enguiki in the boma of the medicine man with an invitation to one of the traditional Masai round houses. “Question time” with the medicine man. Late afternoon drive from Monduli Juu to Lake Eyas ( Land of Hadzabe tribe) , Dinner and Overnight at Dinner and overnight at Lake Eyasi Lodge.Meals: B,L,D
- Day 7FULL DAY IN LAKE EYASIAfter early breakfast you will go into the bush for hunting accompanied by the Hadzabe Bushmen. While you are there you will learn how to find the animal tracks and how to set up the arrows ready to kill the animals. You will also visit the Dagota pastoral nomads and herdsmen of the clan; the Dagota culture nearly resembles that of the Maasai. Apart from being pastoralists, the Dagota are also blacksmiths; they make knives and arrowheads which they trade with the Hadzabe Bushmen. Along the beaten track, you will also experience birds of many colors and kinds, especially along Lake Eyasi. In the late afternoon you will be heading back to the Lodge/campsite for dinner and overnight.Meals: B.L.D
- Day 8LAKE EYASI-ARUSHAAfter breakfast we will express our gratitude and say farewell to our host, thereafter we will depart to Arusha . Dinner and overnight at Outpost Lodge.Meals: B,L,D
- Day 9DEPARTURE DAYToday after breakfast or lunch you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your ongoing flight to Zanzibar or flying back home.Meals: B,L

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SAFARI
Preparing for East Africa safari can be a daunting prospect at first glance.
Figuring out when to visit, which parks to include, where to stay, and how long to spend in each location can be a stressful task, but we’re here to help!
PASSPORTS AND VISAS
It is first aspects for Preparation of safaris. All travelers will need a current passport with an expiration date of at least six months from the time of entry into Tanzania. Tanzania tourist visas can be purchased in advance through the nearest Tanzanian embassy, or upon arrival at the airport or border crossing.
VACCINATIONS
Proper health preparations for the trip are your responsibility. You may be able to get your vaccinations from your own physician, but a travels clinic will be more familiar with the necessary vaccines and can also provide other helpful information. Be sure to also discuss malaria prevention with the travel clinic.
TRAVEL AND MEDICAL INSURANCE
East Africa Choice Safaris does not provide insurance for travelers. Speak with your travel agent or airline about options for travel insurance to cover personal accident, medical expenses and medical evacuation, repatriation, trip cancellation and loss of personal effects.
CLOTHING
The weather may vary considerably throughout your trip, or even throughout the day, so plan on clothing that can be layered if it’s cool, or removed if it’s warm. Choose separates that can be mixed and matched, and avoid fabrics that require special care. Neutral colors are good for safari; avoid black and blue clothing as tsetse flies are attracted to those colors. Accessorize with modest jewelry. To respect cultural norms, avoid sleeveless blouses and short shorts or skirts.
Depending on your itinerary, consider a pair of sturdy closed-toe shoes in case of mud or rough terrain. Sandals will be appropriate for safari. Most days will be sunny, so bring appropriate sun protection: hat (wide-brim is best to protect the neck and ears), sunscreen, sunglasses.
MONEY ON SAFARI IN EAST AFRICA.
While all of our Friends of Africa Family Safaris itineraries cover the important things such as accommodation, meals, park entry fees, and game drives – there are always additional costs that might pop up.
Things such as alcoholic beverages, souvenirs, snacks, laundry, and tips for your driver are examples of a few additional costs that might arise during your safari.
Tanzania uses the US Dollar for tourism. We recommend budgeting around $30 – $50 USD per day for incidental expenses and tips.
TIPPING IN EAST AFRICA
Tipping is customary.
We recommend tipping $20 USD per day to your safari driver (per group, not per person), $10 – $15 USD per day to your safari cook (when camping), $20 USD per day to your Kilimanjaro climbing guide, and $10 – $15 USD per day to your Kilimanjaro climbing porters.
You can pay this all at once at the conclusion of your safari or Kilimanjaro climb.
WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR SAFARI:
Packing for your first safari can be a bit daunting. What do you bring? What don’t you need? Below you’ll find our recommended list of things to bring along with you when you’re on safari.
- A backpack;
- Comfortable clothing for daily wear;
- A warm sweater or light fleece;
- A windbreaker or waterproof jacket;
- Walking shoes or boots;
- A dress shirt and trousers or dress for wearing to dinner;
- Sunglasses;
- Hat;
- Sunscreen and lip balm;
- Insect repellent;
- Camera and charger;
- Binoculars;
- A flashlight or headlamp;
- Guide books;
- Phone and charger.
You may also wish to bring your own first aid kit. While all of our Friends of Africa Family Safaris vehicles have their own on board first aid kit, it never hurts to be prepared.
- Anti-malarial medication;
- Painkillers;
- Antihistamines for allergies and insect bites;
- Cold and flu medication;
- Anti-Diarrheal medication;
- Medicines for rehydration after diarrhea or sunstroke;
- Sunscreen and lip balm;
- Eye drops;
- Moisturiser for treating sunburn;
- Antiseptic lotion;
- Rubbing alcohol;
- Bandages and plasters;
- Scissors.
You may also wish to bring along water purification tablets and any medications you take for any existing medical conditions.
Don’t let the above list daunt you. Many of these items are only necessary in extreme cases, but it’s better to have something and not need it than it is to need something and not have it!
