“Out of Africa”

Out of Africa Tent Safari is an idea that came after doing research and discovering that many companies offer a Tanzania camping service that is similar to none and offers a chance for guests to stay close to nature. That’s how I got the idea of Out of Africa Tent Safari., inspired us to organize a different kind of safari, free in nature in the Tanzanian national parks, a camp set up for you by your crew, sleeping in tents with beds, In the evening, dine around a campfire with your own chef, away from the beaten track and accompanied by a knowledgeable Tanzanian guide in search of the ever-migrating game.

“Strong organization, very unique concept, the knowledge of the guide, the very friendly crew, and the food were delicious! We can’t think of a better way to experience our safari in Tanzania”.

Strong organization, very unique concept, the knowledge of the guide, the very friendly crew, and the food were delicious! We can’t think of a better way to experience our safari in Tanzania”.

An “off the beaten track” tent safari in Tanzania.
That is not easy to achieve because it requires a well-trained crew who find their own ways and know how to save themselves without help nearby, and that requires good equipment, because being free in nature also means that there is no provision whatsoever .

Because, also in Tanzania, a tent safari was associated with sleeping on the ground in dome tents and low budget, we founded our own Tanzanian tour operator in 2009 and specialized in classic mobile tent safaris. At first this even caused some hilarity when our crew was seen lugging tents and beds with the heavy tents, toilet and shower. For our guests, having a campfire in the middle of the Serengeti in the evening with just the two of you or your own family provides a unique experience in the great Tanzanian nature.

With its very game-rich and extensive national parks (1/3 of Tanzania is a nature reserve), there are many reasons to choose Tanzania for your safari of a lifetime. In addition, the beaches of Tanzania offer you a great opportunity to recover from the safari.

Campsites for tent safaris in Tanzania’s national parks.

Public campsites.

Other groups can also come to the public campsites, you are alone at the special campsites. These campsites must be booked well in advance and give you a real “Out of Africa” feeling.

The equipment we use for such service are:  De-luxe A-type tents with headspace, fully equipped with stretchers and Maasai bed sheets., 4WD Safari Landcruiser, table , Safari Chairs

Special campsites.

There are no facilities such as water and sanitary facilities at special campsites. They are often no more than mown pieces of land with a name sign, in the middle of the bush. There are special campsites in every Tanzanian national park, but especially in the Serengeti, an area of 200 by 200 kilometers, the special campsites are far from the beaten track. These are ideal to camp on the route of the Great Migration, the migration of 1,500,000 wildebeest and 300,000 zebras. The Serengeti park organization has recently opened ten new special campsites.

Together with you, we select those campsites that best suit your preferences, based on the season. For a stay at a special campsite, permits must be requested from the Tanzanian National Park Organization several months in advance.

Sleep comfortable in Deluxe Safari Tents.

A good night’s sleep is important after a tiring safari. That is why we have opted for beds that are equipped with a mattress, bed linen and pillows. The camp is further equipped with good safari chairs, table, sink and lanterns and, depending on the size of the group, a mess tent.

Sleeping tents:  canvas, ground surface 280×250 cm, height 215 cm, fixed ground sheet of PVC coated polyester, windows are insect-proof with zippers in the inside and outside flap and the tent has a spacious awning. The tent offers enough space to place 3 stretchers.

You sleep on beds with a mattress and all (Maasai) bedding is also present. You can put the luggage under the bed.

Chairs: a comfortable safari chair per person.

Sanitary facilities:  1 shower and 1 toilet tent. 2 safari wash bins per tent.
Of course, a shower and toilet tent is also part of the equipment. The cook will even make sure you can take a hot shower in the middle of the bush!

The Number of Crew Members and Transport depends on the size of the group:

2 guests, 3man crew: 1 guide, 1 cook, 1 assistant, 1 x 4WD.
4 guests, 4 man crew: 1 guide, 1 cook, 2 assistants, 1 x 4WD, 1 luggage car.
6 guests, 5 man crew: guide, 1 cook, 3 assistants, 1 x extended 4WD, 1 luggage car.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SAFARI

Preparing for East Africa safari can be a daunting prospect at first glance.

Figuring out when to visit, which parks to include, where to stay, and how long to spend in each location can be a stressful task, but we’re here to help!

PASSPORTS AND VISAS

It is first aspects for Preparation of safaris. All travelers will need a current passport with an expiration date of at least six months from the time of entry into Tanzania. Tanzania tourist visas can be purchased in advance through the nearest Tanzanian embassy, or upon arrival at the airport or border crossing.

VACCINATIONS

Proper health preparations for the trip are your responsibility. You may be able to get your vaccinations from your own physician, but a travels clinic will be more familiar with the necessary vaccines and can also provide other helpful information. Be sure to also discuss malaria prevention with the travel clinic.

TRAVEL AND MEDICAL INSURANCE

East Africa Choice Safaris does not provide insurance for travelers. Speak with your travel agent or airline about options for travel insurance to cover personal accident, medical expenses and medical evacuation, repatriation, trip cancellation and loss of personal effects.

CLOTHING

The weather may vary considerably throughout your trip, or even throughout the day, so plan on clothing that can be layered if it’s cool, or removed if it’s warm. Choose separates that can be mixed and matched, and avoid fabrics that require special care. Neutral colors are good for safari; avoid black and blue clothing as tsetse flies are attracted to those colors. Accessorize with modest jewelry. To respect cultural norms, avoid sleeveless blouses and short shorts or skirts.
Depending on your itinerary, consider a pair of sturdy closed-toe shoes in case of mud or rough terrain. Sandals will be appropriate for safari. Most days will be sunny, so bring appropriate sun protection: hat (wide-brim is best to protect the neck and ears), sunscreen, sunglasses.

MONEY ON SAFARI IN EAST AFRICA.

While all of our Friends of Africa Family Safaris itineraries cover the important things such as accommodation, meals, park entry fees, and game drives – there are always additional costs that might pop up.

Things such as alcoholic beverages, souvenirs, snacks, laundry, and tips for your driver are examples of a few additional costs that might arise during your safari.

Tanzania uses the US Dollar for tourism. We recommend budgeting around $30 – $50 USD per day for incidental expenses and tips.

TIPPING IN EAST AFRICA

Tipping is customary.

We recommend tipping $20 USD per day to your safari driver (per group, not per person), $10 – $15 USD per day to your safari cook (when camping), $20 USD per day to your Kilimanjaro climbing guide, and $10 – $15 USD per day to your Kilimanjaro climbing porters.

You can pay this all at once at the conclusion of your safari or Kilimanjaro climb.
